In this workshop led by textile artist Ann Hermes, you will learn two historical methods for plush embroidery commonly seen in the southeastern Pennsylvania in the late 19th and up to the mid-20th century.
In the first method, wool yarn is stitched in layers on needlepoint canvas. Cutting through the layers creates a geometrical plush design. This decorative plush method is seen in chair covers and pincushions historically.
In the second method, wool yarn is stitched over a template on wool fabric. After adding several layers of yarn, the stitches are cut to release the template and the plush design is exposed. Many shapes including flowers, stars, and leaves can be made.
In addition, to learning the stitching techniques, you will have an opportunity to study many antique plush work items, from bedcovers to pincushions, which will be on display. There you may find inspiration for your own work!
Please bring a bag lunch—drinks will be provided. Please bring a 6-inch embroidery hoop and small scissors. The other materials will be supplies. Pre-registration is required for the workshop and the cost of the workshop is $60. Go to schwenkfelder.org/calendar and click on the workshop date or call 215-679-3103.
