Presented by Katelyn Reist

Draft horses have played a key role throughout history—from pulling farm machinery in the fields and as horsepower for farming equipment to delivering goods and pulling Conestoga wagons. During the presentation, Katelyn will speak on farming practices from the late 1700s through the early 1900s and the important role draft horses played. Draft horse breeds, agricultural use, equipment/harness associated with horses, and the wagons that horses pulled will be discussed. Since draft horses hauled freight in Conestoga wagons, Katelyn will also cover their role and use of the Conestoga wagon. She also will touch briefly on other types of draft animals including oxen and mules. There will be some artifacts associated with horses, the Conestoga wagon, and agricultural tools to view at the presentation.
